Safe Operation of Bicycles and E-Bikes

As warmer weather approaches and more families enjoy time outdoors, the City of Obetz Police Department would like to remind parents and young riders about the proper and lawful operation of bicycles and electric bicycles (e-bikes) on public roadways.

Bicycles and e-bikes are great tools for recreation, transportation, and exercise. However, when operated on public streets, they are legally considered vehicles and must follow the same traffic laws as cars and trucks.

Obey Traffic Laws

If riding on the roadway, cyclists must:

  • Stop at stop signs and red lights
  • Obey all traffic control devices and signals
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic
  • Yield the right-of-way when required
  • Use proper hand signals when turning or stopping

Failure to follow traffic laws not only increases the risk of injury but may also result in citations.

E-Bikes Are Not Toys

Electric bicycles can travel at higher speeds than traditional bicycles. Parents should ensure their children:

  • Understand how quickly an e-bike can accelerate
  • Maintain safe speeds appropriate for neighborhood streets
  • Avoid carrying passengers unless the bike is specifically designed for it
  • Never operate an e-bike distracted or while using a phone

Ride Predictably and Be Visible

Safety is a shared responsibility. Young riders should:

  • Wear a properly fitted helmet
  • Use lights and reflectors when riding at dawn, dusk, or nighttime
  • Make eye contact with drivers at intersections
  • Avoid weaving between parked cars
  • Stay alert and aware of surroundings at all times

Sidewalk vs. Roadway

Parents should discuss with their children where it is safest and lawful to ride. In many situations, riding on the roadway requires maturity, good judgment, and a clear understanding of traffic laws.

If riding in the street, cyclists must ride as close as practicable to the right-hand side of the roadway, except when turning or avoiding hazards.

A Message to Parents

Parents play a vital role in ensuring their children understand that operating a bicycle or e-bike on public streets carries real responsibility. Please take time to review traffic rules with your children and supervise younger riders.

A bicycle or e-bike is not just a recreational item — on the roadway, it is a vehicle under Ohio law.

The City of Obetz Police Department is committed to keeping our neighborhoods safe. Through education and awareness, we can help prevent accidents and ensure everyone enjoys a safe and active season.
