At the February 10, 2025, Obetz City Council meeting, two dedicated officers from the Obetz Police Department were publicly recognized for their heroic actions that helped save a life. Corporal Steven Ward and Officer Kendall McCoy were each presented with the prestigious Life-Saving Award in acknowledgment of their swift response and exceptional professionalism during a medical emergency on January 12, 2025.
On that day, Cpl. Ward and Officer McCoy were dispatched to a critical emergency at 2220 Rodger Road, where a citizen was found unresponsive and not breathing. Upon arrival, Cpl. Ward quickly assessed the situation and determined the individual was suffering from a sudden cardiac event. Without hesitation, he initiated CPR to restore circulation while Officer McCoy swiftly prepared the Automated External Defibrillator (AED). As Cpl. Ward maintained chest compressions, Officer McCoy ensured the AED was properly positioned and ready to deliver a life-saving shock when needed. Their seamless teamwork and rapid response played a crucial role in stabilizing the patient, who eventually regained a pulse and was transported to the hospital for further care.
Thanks to their combined efforts, the patient regained a pulse and was successfully transported to the hospital for further medical care. Their actions not only exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement but also serve as a testament to the importance of emergency response training.
