How Obetz Tackles Snowstorms
Winter in Obetz, Ohio, recently hit hard with a snowstorm that left streets blanketed and residents navigating a snowy wonderland. While snow days can feel magical, they also demand serious preparation and coordination from the city. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how Obetz gears up for, responds to, and cleans up after a snowstorm to keep the community safe and moving.
Preparing for the Storm
Watching the Weather
Obetz staff begins storm prep by keeping a close eye on weather forecasts, especially through reliable sources like NOAA. Whether it’s a snowstorm or a summer heatwave, our team is constantly monitoring conditions to stay ahead of the curve. For snowstorms, we’re on the lookout for predicted accumulation and ice storms; and, evaluating timing to mobilize resources.
Equipment in Tip-Top Shape
Plowing snow is hard on equipment. We always make sure our snowplows and salt trucks are ready to roll. Before any storm, we inspect and maintain all machinery, restock de-icing supplies like salt and sand, and ensure we’re ready to respond. After each storm, we begin repairing equipment to get it ready for the next event.
All Hands-on Deck
When a storm is on the horizon, the city’s team springs into action. Using an “all hands-on deck” approach, staffing schedules are carefully planned, with on-call crews prepped to jump in as needed. Main roads are always our top early priority, ensuring emergency services and essential travelers can move safely. Once those are clear, we shift focus to neighborhoods.
Keeping Residents in the Know
Communication is key during snow season. Obetz enforces Emergency Snow Parking Ordinance 315.13, which requires cars to be off streets when two inches or more of snow is forecasted. Updates are shared through the city website, social media, and press releases. In 2025, we’re stepping it up with email and text alerts for even better communication—keep an eye on our website to sign up for alerts!
Clearing the Roads: Snowstorm Response
The First Few Hours
As snow begins to fall, our crews hit the streets, focusing on main roads, emergency routes, and bus paths. Our first goal is to make sure the roads are clear for emergency responders, and those that need to be traveling in winter weather. When there is time before a storm, drivers are deployed in salt or brine trucks to pre-treat the roads and prevent ice from forming.
Tackling Neighborhoods
Once the critical routes are under control, we move into residential areas. Residents play a crucial role here by clearing parked cars from streets so plows can do their job. Without cooperation, it slows everything down!
When Cars Are in the Way
Despite reminders, some vehicles remain parked on streets during snow emergencies. If vehicles remain on the roads after the declaration of the Winter Weather Emergency, the cars will be ticketed; and, unfortunately towed to ensure the safety of our traveling public and your property.
And here’s a heads-up: If your car is hit by a plow while parked on the street during a snow emergency, the city isn’t liable for damages. That would be a devastating event for the car owner that we work desperately to avoid.
Cleaning Up After the Storm
Final Touches
Once the storm ends, crews handle the finishing touches: plowing road edges and clearing gutters to make space for parking, opening storm drains to manage melting snow and prevent icy hazards, and hauling away large snow piles to designated areas. Clearing sidewalks, crosswalks, and fire hydrants also gets tackled with help from residents and businesses.
Gearing Up for the Next Round
After the hard work, it’s time for a reset. Trucks and plows are inspected for any wear and tear, and salt supplies are restocked to prepare for the next potential storm.
Keeping the Community Updated
Post-storm updates keep residents informed about road conditions and any lingering restrictions. The city also gathers feedback from residents through various platforms to keep improving snow removal processes.
The Reason Behind Obetz’s Snowstorm Strategy
Safety First
Clear roads are critical for emergency responders and public safety. Ensuring accessibility during a storm can make all the difference.
Efficiency Matters
Efficient snow removal saves time, money, and headaches. Clear roads also reduce the risk of accidents caused by ice and narrow passageways.
A Shared Responsibility
We can’t do it alone! Resident cooperation is crucial for smooth snow removal. By following ordinances and keeping streets clear, the community helps ensure safer, faster snow removal for everyone.
Wrapping It Up
Winter storms are no match for Obetz when the city and its residents work together. Preparedness, quick action, and cooperation minimize the impact of snowstorms on daily life and keep everyone safe.
