City of Obetz Shares Important Water Update
The City of Obetz recently mailed letters to select households as part of a new requirement from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This initiative is part of a national effort to identify water service line materials and ensure they do not pose any potential health risks.
While the letter contains essential information about lead in drinking water, we want to clarify the facts about Obetz’s water system and why this outreach is necessary:
- There is No Lead in Obetz Water
The City of Obetz conducts rigorous water quality testing 40 times per year, and we are pleased to report that there is no lead in the water supplied to any household in Obetz. The City of Obetz is committed to delivering clean, safe drinking water to every household. We are taking proactive steps to meet the EPA’s requirements and protect the health of our community.
- EPA’s New Requirement
Starting this year, the EPA has mandated all municipalities to identify the material of every water service line connecting properties to water mains. If you received this letter, it means that the City of Obetz has been unable to visually confirm the material of your service line and requires a physical inspection to complete this identification process.
- What This Letter Means for You
The letter does not confirm the presence of lead in your service line. Your pipes could be made of copper, plastic, or other materials. However, the EPA wants to ensure that no service line contains lead or galvanized materials previously connected to lead.
- What You Should Do
If you received this letter, please contact our customer service department at 614-491-7804 to schedule an inspection. This will allow us to confirm the material of your service line and meet EPA’s compliance standards.
For additional information about this effort, the health effects of lead, and steps you can take to reduce the risk of lead exposure, visit the EPA’s website at: http://www.epa.gov/lead.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work together to maintain the safety and integrity of our water system.
