Councilman Jim Wiley Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I am sorry to inform you that Councilman Jim Wiley passed away last night at 75 years old.

Jim retired from a 38-year career in the Army and Air Force.  He worked in the Air Force, the Air National Guard, and the Air Force Reserve, and ultimately finished his career in an Army uniform as a Military Police training battalion commander.  He worked worldwide at every level; however, in Ohio, he is best known for taking an historic ANG squadron from marginal status to the Air Force’s Outstanding Unit in two years.  Jim married Obetz native and Councilmember Bonnie (Holbrook) Wiley in 2001 during his last assignment at Rickenbacker ANGB and moved from the base to Obetz that year.

On January 1, 2008, Jim was elected to the Obetz Council. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2016.  As a member of the Village Council, Jim served as President Pro-Tem and chairman of the Legislation Committee.  Jim was a part of many great projects during his time as a Council Member. Some of his notable projects include; Fortress Obetz, Dixon Quarry, the Obetz Athletic Club, the Obetz Community Center, Area 51, and Braehead Preserve.  In addition to his role on Council, Jim served Obetz in many ways over the years.  He was a member of the Obetz Block Watch; President of the Obetz Historical Society; the Obetz Tax Incentive Review Commission; and, was Vice President of the Big Walnut Area Community Improvement Corporation.

Jim was wonderful to work with.  Jim’s passion for Obetz was a rarity.  He was a staunch advocate for the people of Obetz and never cared for a second what anyone, but the residents, thought of the work he was doing for them.  He will be sadly missed by us all.
